I asked whether we might have some gorgonzola piccante included. I asked our waiter what “cured meats and cheeses” would be included. The menu promised “a delicious selection of authentic Italian cured meats and cheeses”. Having perused the menu beforehand online, I thought the antipasto plate would be a great thing to share as an appetizer. It could, theoretically, still be redeemed by a superior main meal. Oh well, this was simply the Italian-restaurant-version of (pretty good) salsa and store-bought chips at your favorite Tex-Mex. While I had been hoping and hankering for delicious, crusty, chewy Mediterranean loaves (perhaps even warm!), we were fed a bread that I would consider more-or-less-adequate bread for a BLT, dry-ish sandwich bread, the opposite of crusty or chewy. We were immediately brought a pretty good basil dipping oil and some very disappointing bread. No more flourishes of the wait staff grating just the right amount of fresh “Parmigiano Reggiano” over one’s pasta, I surmised, nor any elegant twists of the tall wooden pepper mill dispensing a shower of fresh pepper onto one’s Seafood Risotto.Īn aside: we were seated quite quickly (perhaps a ten-minute wait) and the various staff were efficient and friendly throughout our time there. I got my first inkling that “fine dining” might no longer be high on the priority list as I walked through the door and spotted the little shaker-jars of pre-ground “Parmesan” cheese sitting on each table - each of which also sported a set of those plastic supermarket salt-and-pepper grinders. On that score, at least, Di Lisio’s delivers big time - quantity triumphs, quality struggles to gain a foothold. with too many tables crowded in that is, at best, a rather run-of-the-mill Italian family restaurant that caters to the “big-portion” crowd. What has emerged from the ashes is a small space.
